Koninginnedag

The
Lowdown: Ribald, a little drunken, and wholly good natured, Queen's Day is the
can't-miss street party of the highest order and worth
planning your Amsterdam visit around. The Dutch are
notoriously indifferent toward their royal family, but
every April 30 the streets of Amsterdam become a sea of
orange colors as locals go crazy, dress in ridiculous
costumes, and celebrate the ascension of Queen Beatrix
to the throne. Concerts, street parties, fireworks, and
the planet's largest spontaneous flea market all add up to
the premier event on Amsterdam's
fun calendar. The best night to join the fun is the evening
before.
When: April 30; free.
Where: Museumplein, Dam
Square, Jordaan, Vondelpark, everywhere else
