The Draw: The massive collection of Golden Age paintings includes such masterpieces as Vermeer’s The Kitchen Maid and Rembrandt’s The Jewish Bride and The Night Watch.
The Scene: The imposing building, designed by Pierre Cuypers and completed in 1885, houses one of the world’s most significant collections of paintings and creates the perfect atmosphere for Old-World culture. Sat–Thu 9am–6pm, Fri 9am–10pm. €

Come on a weekday to avoid the crowd, opt for the informative audio tour, and jump the line by purchasing an entrance ticket in advance on the museum’s website.

Stedelijk Museum

The Draw: Groundbreaking art, in various media, from today’s hottest artists.
The Scene: Years of renovations will culminate in a grand reopening on the Museumplein, expected to occur at the end of 2010. Until December 2009, Stedelijk Goes to Town will showcase pieces from impressive modern and contemporary art collection in major exhibitions throughout Amsterdam. Check the website for a list of the current and upcoming exhibits, and for updates on the reopening of the museum.
Hot Tip: The new site will boast the largest modern art library in the Netherlands.

Van Gogh Museum

The Draw: The world’s largest Van Gogh collection contains a wealth of iconic works by the artist: Sunflowers, The Potato Eaters, and Self-Portrait as an Artist are standouts.
The Scene: With a main building designed by Gerrit Rietveld and an exhibition hall designed by Kisho Kurokawa, the museum is the perfect light and airy showcase for boldly colored masterpieces. Even the most jaded art snob has to be impressed. Sat–Thu 10am–6pm, Fri 10am–10pm. €
Hot Tip: Come early in the day (right at 10am) to avoid the largest crowds. Look for the perfect gift at the museum shop. It has a comprehensive selection of books, stationery, posters, and reproductions.
