» Weeknight Fun Athens
Nobody nails the weekend’s can’t-miss nightlife like Night+Day. But what if you’re feeling feisty mid-week? Forget about quiet evenings curled up with your Kindle—we’re giving you prime picks for Weeknight Fun around the world. Hump day will never be the same!
The Draw:If you’re looking for a nightclub, an arts space, bohemian crowds, and edible décor, then Booze Cooperativa is the weeknight place for you. The Scene: Since Booze’s founding as an artist’s cooperative in 1989, this four-story building has hosted art exhibitions, video installations, seminars, and theatrical performances, all of which have raised its profile among the arts and culture types and maked it a regular fixture on any self-respecting Athenian’s agenda. The avant-garde décor—which includes a giant lampshade made out of edible Greek pastry—ensures both good eats and a palpable buzz on weeknights. Hot Tip: For constant conversation, take a seat at one of the communal tables by the entrance and immerse yourself in the intellectual crowd.
Priza Bar
Christou Lada 1, Plateia Karitsi, Psirri, 210.324.4101
The Draw: There’s no other bar in town quite like Priza Bar. No matter what the night, there’s always a party going on behind its glass exterior. The Scene: Priza (which means “plug” in Greek) lives up to its name. There are plugs all over this place, including a plug that connects a giant lampshade hanging from the ceiling with an image of a girl that hangs on the wall. Perhaps it’s those very plugs that imbue Priza Bar with the energy that stirs crowds here into a dancing frenzy every night of the week. Of course those classic pop and rock tunes don’t hurt either. Hit up Priza on Wednesday for alternative sounds from FoG or Thursday for DJ Jeo Reani's freestyle night. Hot Tip: If you’re looking to eat before plugging into Priza, check out the surrounding Plateia Karitsi, a bustling square that boasts a number of excellent bars and restaurants.
Joker’s
Voulis 7, Syntegra, 210.321.9225
The Draw:If you’re stuck in the city with no place to go, and you’re looking to make a Saturday night of a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday evening, then Joker’s is THE place to be. The Scene: Blink and you might miss this small café and cocktail bar tucked away on Voulis Street behind the mighty Syntagma Square. And it would be a shame if you did, because once you walk through the heavy glass door you’ll find yourself in a circus of sorts, one reminiscent of cabaret, Montmartre, and 1970’s rock ‘n’ roll all rolled into one. Joker’s diverse playlist packs this little bar with a lively crowd with a thirst for fun. Hot Tip: The cocktail list is extensive and eclectic. If a classic cocktail bores you, try the Mochito, which replaces the rum found in a Mojito with Masticha, a liqueur made from fruit found only on Chios Island.
