Tots Sants

The
Lowdown: All Saints' Day is celebrated right after Halloween. And while dressing up in ghoulish gear has become more popular in recent years (as well as bars throwing more Halloween-themed nights on October 31), the traditional focus is on remembering deceased loved ones. In all the city’s cemeteries, families get busy cleaning niches and graves and laying flowers (bought from dozens of makeshift flower stalls set up outside the gates) and often holding vigils. The best place to see this moving event is the Montjuïc Cemetery, which overlooks the city and is full of Art Nouveau headstones and funerary art. Like all Catalan traditions, Tots Sants has its own sweetmeat—in this case panellets, delicious marzipan-based cakes that are sold in the cake shops all through November. (For the best, try Escrib, Las Ramblas 83, M. Liceu).
When: November 1. Free.
Where: Cementiri Sud-Oest de Montjuïc, Mare de Déu de Port 56-58 and all the city’s cemeteries
