Best Weeknight Fun

Barcelona

Club Mix
21 Comerç, Born, 93.319.4696
mixbcn.com

The Draw: This house music venue, while jam-packed on weekends, is better experienced on Tuesday nights, when bossa nova and jazz (termed ‘exotic sounds’ by venue promoters) liven up this traditionally listless night of the week.
The Scene: Never lacking in atmosphere, Club Mix is aimed at international 20-somethings who are looking for a drink and a dance. Leave your coat at the entrance and get ready to make eye contact.  As Brit band Blur put it, this is a great venue for ‘boys who like girls who like girls who like boys.’
Hot Tip: Mix is one for the party punters, but sit-down jazz lovers can find live music at the Harlem Jazz Club (harlemjazzclub.es). This jazz classic waives its cover charge on Tuesdays when multicultural groups squeeze onto its tiny stage.

Maldà Arts Forum
5 Pí, Barri Gòtic, 93.481.3704
cinemalda.es

The Draw: For cinephiles on a budget, Monday nights can only mean Maldà: a classic art-house venue for lovers of films in their un-dubbed, original versions.
The Scene: From classic cinema by famed directors to bombastic Bollywood flicks to quirky shorts to Japanese epics–Maldà has it all. The only catch is there’s just one screen, so what’s showing can be a hodgepodge. Mondays are ‘day of the spectator,’ which means that for €5 you can enjoy an evening of film in the newly renovated theatre on a bigger, brighter screen.
Hot Tip: The best film festivals in town happen in Maldà—Cine Ambigú features offbeat European film on Tuesdays (retinas.org).

Mercat de les Flors
59 Lleida, Poble Sec, 93.426.1875
mercatflors.cat

The Draw: A former spice market, this spectacular dance venue is the place to be on weekday evenings when, for under €20, you can get a front row seat and a practically private performance. There’s even a cheap bar! Gulp.
The Scene: Make a night of it. Start at the excellent dance space where, on every Wednesday in April, you can enjoy arty contemporary dance stars Mal Pelo. Located in one of the more underappreciated parts of the city, it’s also a great area to grab some cheap grub and visit a local bar.  Head downhill to pedestrianized C/Blai and take your pick.
Hot Tip: For a truly unique bar, Tinta Roja (tintaroja.net) is a vast and wondrous bohemian den in the Argentine turn-of-the-century style.
