Chicago

First Fridays at the Museum of Contemporary Art
220 E. Chicago Ave., Magnificent Mile, 312-280-2660
mcachicago.org

The Draw: The sprawling museum kicks off the weekend on the first Friday of each month with DJs, live performances, food, drinks, and the unveiling of a new exhibit. You’ll encounter art—a stunning array of post-war paintings, installations, sculptures, and photos—as well as pick-up artists.
The Scene: Trendy young professionals (graphic designers, musicians, ad execs)—most in their 20s and 30s—cluster before makeshift bars on the museum’s first two floors. As the night progresses, people trickle into the upper-level galleries to eye up Alexander Calder mobiles, Andy Warhol prints, and more. Still, the pounding of bass and the promise of matchmaking lead people back to the foyer, which, by the end of the night, has transformed into a bona fide dance floor.
Hot Tip: If you’re not in town for First Fridays, check the museum’s weekend performance schedule. Internationally known dance companies, theatre troupes, and spoken-word artists are booked at the onsite auditorium. Who knows who you’ll meet at intermission?

Roscoe’s
3356 N. Halsted St., Lakeview, 773-281-3355
roscoes.com

The Draw: One of Chicago’s biggest and most popular gay bars, Roscoe’s morphs from cheerful lunch spot to happy hour haven to steamy dance club as the day progresses. Order a $6 frozen cocktail (specially priced on Mondays and Wednesdays); they go down like slushies, but pack a real punch.
The Scene: It’s business in the front, party in the back. The convivial front-of-the-house bar is the place to chat, shoot pool, or watch old movies (Mommy Dearest is a fave). The back room pulses as DJs spin club hits from Britney, Madonna, and others. While it’s not conducive to conversation, it’s clear by the risqué dancing that some patrons prefer let their bodies talk.
Hot Tip: Regular events make Roscoe’s stand out. Check the monthly calendar online to find karaoke matches, bingo nights, and drag shows. Show up early for the best shot at participating.

Tavern on Rush
1031 N. Rush St., Gold Coast, 312-664-9600
tavernonrush.com

The Draw: The bustling bar and steak house sits in what locals call “The Viagra Triangle.” Gauche references aside, Tavern is a classic hotspot with undeniable energy that makes everyone feel at home. Stiff martinis help.
The Scene: While the crowd skews business-mature during the week, weekends welcome young jock types, plus bachelorettes spilling over from the rowdy bars three blocks north on Division Street. After 11pm, the music gets louder and the line around the circular bar becomes two-deep. No matter: Super-smiley waitress rove, asking to replenish drinks before you drain your glass.
Hot Tip: The staff is used to making love connections, so feel free to send a flute of Champagne—or even a plate of crispy crab cakes—over to the cutie you’ve been scoping. No one will bat an eye.
