Royal Ascot
The Lowdown: By far the most social of the summer race meetings, this five-day extravaganza is as much about fine clothes and millenary as horses. You have to be a regular (or be recommended by one) to lay your hands on a badge for the exclusive Royal Enclosure, where the most dressed-up racegoers saunter. No luck this year? Fortunately, the newly renovated facilities include plenty of elegant eateries where you can console yourself with good food and champagne, or you could be wildly extravagant and hire a private box.

When: Tuesday through Saturday of the third week in June; prices vary.

Where: Ascot Racecourse, Ascot, Berkshire
