London
Claridge's Bar at Claridge's Claridge's, 55 Brook St., W1, Mayfair, 020-7629-8860 www.claridges.co.uk
The Scene: Underscoring the classicism of its impeccable art deco interior, Claridge's elegant bar attracts a young, stylish crowd of jet-setters. The bar staff have the level of class that is the stuff of legend, and the selection of champagne is the best you'll find north of the Channel. The Clincher: With the discerning seal of approval from both royalty and the internationally famous (Madonna and Bob Geldof were recently spotted, though not together), Claridge's reputation precedes it, and we're happy to say it's not hype. There's no smarter place for a big celebratory toast. Mon-Sat noon-1am, Sun 4pm-midnight.
Vertigo 42 25 Old Broad St., Tower 42, EC2, The City, 020-7877-7842 www.vertigo42.co.uk
The Scene: Don't go looking for white Burgundy: It's bubbles only at London's highest restaurant. Suited city slickers and courting couples sample flutes of the 27 varieties of fizz on offer—600 feet up (hence the name). With a different bottle suggestion to accompany each dish on the menu, dinner here is also a delectable prospect. The Clincher: You won't find another place to view city's skyline as impressive as this. It's the perfect spot to take that date you want to impress, so long as he or she doesn't find the vista more scintillating than your witty repartee. Mon-Fri noon-3pm and 5-11pm.
The Scene: With eight rooms, a restaurant, several bars, and a lively club, this is one of those destination hotels where you don't need to leave the front door to have a lavishly entertaining weekend. While hotel guests lean towards the business end of the spectrum, the bar and club attract revelers that are here for unabashed decadence. Mon-Thu 10am-1am, Fri 10am-3am, Sat 6pm-3am. The Clincher: While most will content themselves with clinking glasses of champagne downstairs, those wishing to truly splash out can do so in a tubful of the stuff in the privacy of one of the hotel's swanky bathrooms. Haunts of capricious superstars excepted, this is the only place in the world we've run across that offers this service.
