Los Angeles

Rivera
1050 S. Flower St., Downtown, 213-749-1460
riverarestaurant.com

The Draw: This downtown draw is a rare triple-threat, one that satisfies critics, connoisseurs, and foodies alike. The ultra-modern interior with its big-city vibe is a perfect complement to Sedlar’s ingenious tapas-style plates, which liven conversation, especially after a few of mixologist Julian Cox’s “artisan-to-glass” cocktails (try the Strawberry Fields). Speaking of drinks, there’s no better way to indulge in tequila tasting than in the custom leather armchairs designed specifically for slow sipping.
The Scene: Just a Kobe dribble-drive from the Staples Center and LA Live, chef John Sedlar’s pan-Latin restaurant draws raves for its innovative dishes, adventurous cocktails, and sultry scene.
Hot Tip: If you can’t score a seat for prime-time dinner hours, or if you just want to save a buck, Rivera offers a late night menu (10:30pm–midnight) that includes a choice of six small plates ($6–$10 each), 14 signature drinks ($8–$10), and three imported beers ($4).

Osteria Mozza
6602 Melrose Ave., Hollywood, 323-297-0100
mozza-la.com

The Draw: This East Coast/West Coast collaboration between Mario Batali and Nancy Silverton is that rare breed of genius that not only lives up to the hype, but also exceeds it. Batali’s one-of-a-kind brand is everywhere, from his infamous “orange clogs” to his riffs on classic Italian recipes, while Silverton delivers her artisan baked goods that have already made her a local hero. Reservations are still harder to score than Lakers floor seats, so be prepared to wear out the re-dial on your cell.
The Scene: The dynamic duo’s sequel to their standout Pizzeria Mozza, Osteria balances rustic charm and an upscale dining experience with LA’s best Italian food.
Hot Tip: Reservations are usually booked weeks in advance, but seats at the mozzarella bar (of which there are 13) and the Amaro bar (of which there are 10) are reserved for walk-ins; these you’ll have a better chance of scoring if you arrive early (before 7pm) or late (after 10pm).

XIV
8117 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, 323-656-1414
xivla.com

The Draw: The space, formerly Shelter nightclub, has been re-imagined by Phillipe Starck and evokes the drama and lavishness of a set from The Tudors, juxtaposing contemporary elements with traditional European accents to create something entirely unique along the Sunset Strip.
The Scene: If SBE builds it, LA’s rich and famous will come. And if award-winning chef Michael Mina is in the kitchen dishing out wildly inventive continental cuisine you get a restaurant whose menu actually measures up to its scene.
Hot Tip: Check out “6ix on Sunset,” an haute happy hour on the terrace featuring $6 cocktails, $6 plates, and $6 valet parking Tue–Sat from 6–8pm. The relaxed atmosphere and modest prices are the best way to taste everything XIV has to offer.
