The Draw: Delicious desserts from Madrid’s oldest sweet shop. The Scene: An unpretentious little shop that’s been causing tooth decay since 1830 with handmade pastries, cakes, and cookies that are second to none. They have many traditional Spanish offerings, especially around Christmas when they make turrón, an almond-based confection that comes in many flavors. Take the time to admire the store’s antique interior and the museum-piece cash register. Takeaway only. Hot Tip: The excellent preserves will stay fresh on your flight home, and because they’re packaged, will make it through customs.
The Draw:Muy moda footwear and purses from one of Madrid’s hottest designers. The Scene: A chic, roomy store showcasing Dorotea’s urban, modern style. She specializes in boots, sandals, and high heels modish enough to make it into the pages of top fashion magazines in both Spain and the US. There’s a wide selection of purses, too. The Draw: Elegant porcelain from one of Spain’s most respected ceramicists. The Scene: Tea and coffee sets, vases, and plates in a signature style that tends toward the simple yet elegant. The abstract figurines show Picasso’s influence. Madrileños with good taste often shop here for wedding gifts. Hot Tip: Look for the beautiful and rare turquoise ware, made only once every few years.
