Carnaval
1
The Lowdown: Take a Mexican fiesta, mix it with a taste of Brazilian Carnaval and a punch of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras, and you have one of North America’s greatest parties. Mexico celebrates Carnaval across this colorful land with parades, concerts, culinary and cultural festivals, singing, dancing, and plenty of pageantry. The celebratory events often blend pre-Hispanic and Catholic traditions with a unique Mexican flair. Mazatlán hosts the world’s third biggest Carnaval party (and this is where we recommend you head), after Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans, and other cities that explode with festive fire are Veracruz, Campeche, Mérida, and Cozumel. Make hotel reservations months in advance if you plan to come for Carnaval.

When: Starting three to nine days prior to Ash Wednesday. Free.

Where: Mazatlán, Veracruz, Mexico City, and various locations throughout Mexico
