Día de Todos los Santos and Día de los Muertos/All Saints Day and Day of the Dead
1
The Lowdown: The Mexican celebration of All Saints Day and All Souls’ Day, usually referred to as el Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, includes offerings to ancestors both in cemeteries and in homes, and all−night vigils in smaller towns. The most animated party in Mexico City take place in the south of the city at San Andrés Mixquic, Tláhuac, where processions lead the way to the cemetery in the evening, and the dead are remembered with offerings of the foods that were their favorites in life, as well as traditional poems called calaveras, or skeletons. Wonderful offerings made with food (including special breads and skull−shaped sugar candies made only at this time of year), flowers, brightly colored paper, and candles are also displayed around this time of year at the Museo Dolores Olmedo Patiño. Large−scale celebrations in Oaxaca (where the most famous party takes place) and Pátzcuaro also attract many visitors.

When: November 1−2. Free.

Where: San Andrés Mixquic, Tláhuac
