March Love Letter
Spring’s here! And fun is busting out all over. Let’s start with the mega-multicultural celebration, Carnaval Miami, the nation’s largest Hispanic festival, through Mar. 14. Among the many events are Carnaval on the 6th and 7th, one mile of art, wine, food, and nonstop performances along Miracle Mile in Coral Gables, and the huge Calle Ocho Festival on the 14th, a 23-block street party filled with musical stages, food, drink, and merriment (carnavalmiami.com). The Winter Party Festival, a weeklong series of events from Mar. 3–8, benefiting the LGBT community, features celeb DJs and parties galore, culminating in a huge beach dance party (winterparty.com). Winter Music Conference, the gathering of dance music artists, DJs, and record industry folks, launches another round of parties and events from Mar. 23–27 (wintermusicconference.com), closing with Ultra Music Festival, America’s top electronic music festival (ultramusicfestival.com).
For sophisticates, world cinema is showcased at the Miami International Film Festival from Mar. 5–14, with five world premieres included in the 115 films and, of course, more parties (miamifilmfestival.com). Some stellar performers head to Miami this month. The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, performs Mar. 17 at AmericanAirlines Arena (aaarena.com). Michael Feinstein honors Ol’ Blue Eyes in A Tribute to Frank Sinatra Mar. 19 at the Arsht Center (arshtcenter.org). Also at the Arsht Center Mar. 3–21 is the mesmerizing musical Wicked.
On to sports! At the Doral, the annual World Golf Championships—CA Championship—features top golfers on the PGA Tour Mar. 9–14 (worldgolfchampionships.com). Key Biscayne hosts the Sony Ericsson Open, where you’ll see some of the world’s top-ranked men and women pro tennis players, from Mar. 22–April 4 (sonyericssonopen.com).
Not fond of crowds? Explore a different neighborhood at the MiMo Madness Festival Mar. 20. One of Miami’s hottest new historic districts, named for the whimsical Miami Modernism architecture in the Biscayne Boulevard neighborhood between 67th and 77th streets, MiMo celebrates with food samplings, arts, crafts, collectibles, and walking tours (mimoboulevard.org). Nearby hotspots include Michelle Bernstein’s Michy’s (michysmiami.com); Soyka (soykacafe.com); and Red Light Little River, Kris Wessel’s funky restaurant (redlightmiami.com). Nature lover’s tip: Snag an outside seat at Red Light and you might see a manatee or two passing by.

MIAMI (2008):
Jack Penrod (Nightlife Impresario)
Jack Penrod has not only watched South Florida go from a sun-and-fun
capital to a sophisticated global getaway for Beautiful People—he’s
responsible for engineering much of its transformation. Penrod catered
to beer-drinking, fun-loving spring breakers when he opened his first
beach club in Fort Lauderdale in 1983, soon expanding into other bars
and hotels. He then set his sights south, debuting Penrod’s Beach Club
on the tip of South Beach in 1988. The area was hardly home to the eye
candy it hosts today—Miami Beach was then a decrepit retirement community
dubbed God’s Waiting Room. But Penrod, envisioning a sexy
beach destination, marketed the palmy sands to those who knew him
best: college kids. And once he built it, they started to come.
A decade later, South Beach had become a magnet for trendy Beach
partygoers and an expanding population of European models,
photographers, and fashion-industry folks. Penrod opened Nikki Beach
at the same location, and the recipe proved irresistible. Cool tepees amid
swaying coconut palms, cozy lounge chairs, and warm ocean breezes
provided an ideal backdrop for weekend beach parties, attracting
gorgeous, scantily clad visitors, celebrities, and jet-setters. In 2000, he
added Pearl Restaurant & Lounge, a sophisticated, upscale dining and
nightlife venue, to the sprawling beachfront party place, giving visitors
the best of both worlds—casual beach parties and an elite see-and-beseen
restaurant lounge where the Cristal flows freely.
Today, Jack Penrod has taken his lounge party clubs global, with Nikki
Beach clubs located in Los Cabos, Sardinia, Marbella, Puerto Vallarta,
St. Barts, and midtown Manhattan, among other stellar destinations. But
it all started in South Beach, where the original Nikki Beach remains the
destination of choice for beautiful people who want to spend lazy afternoons
and nonstop nights in a dreamy haze of surf, sand, and skin.
