The Draw: Sweeping collection of works on display, ranging from paintings by masters Sandro Botticelli and Peter Paul Rubens to beaded handbags by Argentine artist Victoria Gittman. The Scene: A long-awaited expansion added a geometric two-story structure by architect Arata Isozaki. This more than doubled the size of the 1930 Tropical Art Deco building, which was originally a library. The Draw: Count on seeing fresh discoveries here, thanks to dynamic director Bonnie Clearwater’s commitment to emerging artists. The Scene: Within the stunning 23,000-square-foot structure designed by acclaimed architect Charles Gwathmey are works from contemporary artists, including Louise Nevelson, John Baldessari, Julian Schnabel, and Dennis Oppenheim. Tue 11am–5pm, Wed 1–9pm, Thu–Sat 11am–5pm, Sun noon–5pm, last Fri night of every month 7–10pm. $- Hot Tip: On Wednesday nights, MOCA by Moonlight programs are offered, including artists forums, lectures, and hands-on art classes for adults.
The Draw: One of the top collections of contemporary art in the U.S., from the Miami-based Rubell family (one late member was Steve Rubell of Studio 54 fame). The Scene: The 27 galleries and Sculpture Garden show works of celebrated artists like Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons, Purvis Young, Keith Haring, Damian Hirst, Richard Prince, and Charles Ray, many discovered by the Rubells in their emerging stages.
