The
Lowdown: New Orleans' famed Mardi Gras, or Carnival, celebrations include massive parades and bals masqués
— masquerade balls — both private and public, during what is truly a season of its own that runs
for several weeks each late winter and early spring. The height of Carnival season is mostly concentrated in
the last week — and especially the last weekend — prior to Mardi Gras Day. Hotels typically require
three- to five-night stays.
When: Twelfth Night (January 6) through Mardi Gras Day (the Tuesday before the beginning of Lent); parades free.
