Best Weekend Getaway Hotels
Paris
Auberge des Templiers Les Bezards, Boismorand, 02.38.31.80.01, €€€€ lestempliers.com
The Draw: A true country retreat amid vineyards and forests, with Old World charm and modern comforts. The Scene: The Templiers was one of the first in the Relais & Chateaux collection, and it's not hard to see why it still holds their Best Country Hotel Award. Its location overlooking beautiful, oak-wooded parkland couldn't be more verdant. The hotel itself dates from 1690, and though every effort has been made to keep the décor in check with its history, it's not at the expense of style; the bathrooms are particularly sleek. With a large outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, a golf course, and endless outdoor activities, you won't want to spend much time indoors. Hot tip: While there's certainly enough on-site to keep you occupied for a long weekend, it would be shame not to spend a day visiting the castles and vineyards of the nearby Loire Valley.
Château Les Crayères 64 Blvd. Henri Vasnier, Reims, 03.26.82.80.80, €€€€ chateaucrayeres.com
The Draw: Many well-traveled folks argue that this is the best hotel in France, some say in the world. The Scene: This elegant turn-of-the-century residence, just outside Champagne capital Reims, is the last word in sheer luxury. The lavish decor might not be to everyone's taste, but the gastronomy will not fail to impress. It's classic French at its very best: no twists here, just the finest ingredients and faultless execution, all accompanied, of course, by the best bubbly of the region. If all this opulence proves too much, light relief is on hand in the form of tennis courts, a golf course, and other outdoor pursuits. Hot tip: The majority of the Champagne houses are to be found in town, amid stunning Gothic architecture. Most have guided tours, but some can only be visited by appointment, so be sure to call in advance.
The Draw: Within walking distance of the Château de Versailles, this chic retreat has welcomed high-profile guests, including Queen Elizabeth II, Marlene Dietrich, and John Travolta. The Scene: The Trianon is a smart residence surrounded by wooded parkland slap bang in the middle of Versailles. Recently redone with impeccable taste, the décor is elegant and contemporary, in pristine white accented with splashes of bright color that do not detract from the original molded walls, marble floors, and chandeliers. British celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has been drafted to give his own unique spin on French classics, and the Guerlain spa and pool complex is replete with all the gorgeous treatments and products you'd expect from the beauty powerhouse. Hot Tip: The spa's treatments are hugely popular, so be sure to reserve your picks when you book your room.
