Melbourne Cup Carnival
 |
The
Lowdown: When a mare called Makybe Diva won the Melbourne Cup in 2005 for the third year in a row, she cemented her place as a national legend. During four days of races, the Flemington track ups the stakes with the “race that stops a nation.” All over Australia, production lines grind to a halt and office workers gather in front of the television. In Melbourne, it’s even an official holiday. If you’re at the Melbourne Cup, you’ll witness Australia at its most glamorous. Ladies don giant hats, parties are copious—from the parking lot to the VIP tents—and the entire town seems to turn out to celebrate. In fact, in 2005, 383,784 people came for the carnival, bringing along more than 46,000 hats.
When and How Much: First Tuesday in November and three days after. Tickets range from A$50 to A$200. Lawn seats cost more.
Where: Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne.
