The quintessential modern Greek experience flourishes day
and night in Athens: staying up until sunrise, swaying to the intoxicating strains of songs about love and loss, ordering still more bottles of
whiskey and wine.
March Love Letter
Carnival is over and Lent has begun—but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. On Monday nights, Bar Guru Bar will be a blast (bargurubar.gr), as ska-jazz-rock band The Burger Project will bring out the big guns when it comes to whipping up atmosphere. If that doesn’t cut the party mustard, then Thursday night DJ sets with Imam Baildi definitely will (myspace.com/imambaildi).
For a dose of contemporary Greek art, head to the A. Antonopoulou Gallery at Varvakio Square (aaart.gr), where the work of street artist extraordinaire Alexandros Vasmoulakis will be showing until the 6th. You might recognize the work of this painter, also known as Zap51. Notable pieces include a mural of a girl and a boy that brightens up the view of Athinas Street from Monastiraki Square, as well as the armchair piece that looms over Plateia Psirri (zap51.com). And considering Monastiraki Square has just been revamped, it’s worth wandering over to take a look.
I’ll also be visiting Bios, but this time it won’t be for a drink in their minimal, oh-so-cool interior. I’ll be checking out Call Cutta in a Box, a production by German collective Rimini Protokoll. Experimental theatre at its best, it has been described as an intercontinental phone play for which you don’t buy a ticket, you make an appointment (through April 4, bios.gr).
I’ll be wrapping the month up in true Greek theatrical style at the Badminton Theater on March 28–29, when Michael Nyman’s orchestra will accompany Sofia Spyratou’s theatrical dance company, Roes, as they perform the story of Electra (ticketnet.gr).
