It takes a true Barcelonín to throw caution to the wind and open a clothing store at a time when others are jumping ship and closing theirs. But then, this is no ordinary little boutique: The evocatively named Still Light (comitebarcelona.com) opens its doors to the public on March 12, and features the hand-printed shirts and blouses of Finnish-born local Cecilia Sörensen, the tumbling charcoal folds of Barcelona-bred Txell Miras’ cute suits, and brand Wood Wood’s chunky, practical jackets. Pop in and say hello.
Fashionably clad, make your way to one of the most interesting short film festivals on the international circuit from March 27–April 5. The weeklong Mecal ( mecalbcn.org) screens new and classic fictional and documentary work, and includes a section intriguingly entitled “Adaptations from Kafka.” There’s a special focus on Poland this year: Alumni of the prestigious National Film School in Łódź, where the extraordinary director Krzysztof Kieślowski ( Camera Buff, The Double Life of Véronique) studied, reveal their screen dreams… or nightmares. Subtitles are in English.
