NIGHT+DAY Ins and Outs

Our books are published only 45 days after we finish researching and writing each title (one of the fastest turn-around times in the travel guide industry), which means that our content is fresher and more current than most other guidebooks. It's all part of our philosophy: The right place. The right time. It matters.

But our commitment to accurate, timely information doesn't end when our books go to press. The updates to our entire NIGHT+DAY travel guide are available to download. Night+Day’s Top 5 New Openings • November

ATHENS • Kuzina
Most people come to Kuzina for the view, but return for the food. If you’re in a romantic mood, head for the rooftop bar for a mesmerizing view of the Parthenon and a romantic dinner under the stars. If you’re in a more social frame of mind, stake out a table on the pavement for some prime people-watching: There’s a steady stream of activity from around noon until well past midnight. Located in a beautifully renovated neoclassical home a short distance from the Monastiraki and Thisio stations, Kuzina fuses old Athens with modern Greece. Clean lines and white surfaces create the perfect backdrop for Chef Aris Tsanaklidis’s imaginative Mediterranean menu that borrows equally from traditional Greek dishes and nouvelle cuisine. The rooftop bar is sometimes reserved for private parties, so if you have your heart set on that view, call ahead to check.

LONDON • Murano
Backed by the ever-present Gordon Ramsay, top female chef Angela Hartnett returns to the scene with her own restaturant. Murano, despite the hype, is remarkably unpretentious: the calm interior of creams very conservatively embellished with soft green and gold trim, and only the most demure of chandeliers. The food, however, warrants attention. Like all great Italian cuisine, the flavors and quality of the ingredients steal the show. No fads here, just perfectly executed cooking. There’s great use of regional produce, from Cornish red mullet to Scottish beef, all served with flavor-packed vegetables and judicious use of sauce and seasoning. It’s enormously popular with refined lunching ladies and media types, so reservations are absolutely essential.
Mon–Sat noon–2:30pm and 6:30–10:30pm. ££

NEW ORLEANS • Southern Food and Beverage Museum/
Museum of the American Cocktail

New Orleanians love to talk about food and obsess on their own history. It’s a wonder no one opened a food museum here before. This airy space at the Uptown end of the Riverwalk Marketplace covers dining and drinking across the entire South. Sometimes, though, the lengthy explanations next to the displays make you wonder if the curators thought they were hired to write a book. Inside the food museum, however, is the affiliated Museum of the American Cocktail, a fascinating and well-presented exhibit on the fine art of getting drunk. The cases are filled with ancient bottles, old tiki glasses, and even a still.
Mon–Sat 10am–7pm, Sun noon–6pm. $

NEW YORK Matsugen
Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s empire (which includes Spice Market and Vong, among others) continues to expand, this time with Matsugen, an airy Japanese restaurant that once again showcases Vongerichten’s versatility in the kitchen. The menu is fairly straightforward Japanese—sushi, sashimi, shabu-shabu—but the care with which it’s made and presented catapults this spot into the upper tiers: Soba noodles are freshly kneaded, arriving dense and chewy in an aromatic broth, while a Wagyu beef salad is enhanced with sesame dressing. The cuisine is well-matched by the soothing space—blond-wood bar, wire-mesh chairs, and recessed lights—while the crowd tends toward genteel foodies.
Tue–Thu 5:30pm–midnight, Fri–Sat 5:30pm–1am, Sun 5:30pm–midnight
(the bar stays open one hour later than the restaurant). $$$$

PARIS • Chez Arthur
This famous pre- and post-theatre restaurant has gone up a notch in the gastronomic stakes, while retaining its timeless décor of red walls filled with photographs of the stars who have visited over the years. We supped like kings, along with a definitively bobo crowd, the kind who frequent the Marché des Enfants Rouges with its celebrated organic wine merchant. This is no surprise, because one of Chez Arthur’s greatest assets is its sommelier, Emmanuel Perez, passionate about organic and no-added-sulfur wines. The blackboard menu is another nod to the old days, as this is a rather refined cuisine, especially in the starters. Do not bypass the lobster and crayfish tails with citrus fruits. Mains—judging by the duck “burger” Rossini and the pièce de boeuf—are very rich and heavy, but the light touch returns with desserts prepared by a dedicated pâtissier. While another bit of smoky, carousing old Paris might have gone, this place is worth enjoying in its new incarnation in the heart of an evolving district.
Mon noon–2:30pm, Tue–Fri noon–2:30pm and 7pm–midnight, Sat 7pm–midnight. €€
