Barcelona
El
Xampanyet
Carrer de Montcada 22, Gothic Quarter, 93-319-7003
The Scene: The Gothic quarter’s medieval porticos
and ancient alleyways yield abundant historical bars, including the
long-running El Xampanyet where the specialty is, yep, xampany (the
Catalan word for champagne), and the mood is bubbly to match. Blue-tiled
walls, a boisterous bar, and a lively crowd of ruddy-cheeked visitors
and locals make for a memorable night (punctuated by toasts galore)
in Barcelona’s old town. Tue-Sat noon-4pm and 7-11:30pm,
Sun noon-4pm; closed August. The Clincher: The homemade cider, served out of wooden
casks, is out of this world.
La
Pedrera de Nit
Passeig de Gracia 92, Eixample, 902-101-212 www.lapedrera.com
The Scene: By day, Gaudi’s undulating La Pedrera
apartment block is a mesmerizing sight. By night, it’s even
more so, especially after a glass (or three) of cava, Spain’s
answer to champagne. On summer evenings, La Pedrera opens its rooftop
to visitors—enjoy live chamber music while sauntering amid Gaudi’s
eye-catching chimneys, illuminated against the starry night sky. June-August Fri-Sat 9:30pm-11:30pm. Reservations are essential;
call or book a ticket at any Caixa Catalunya bank. The Clincher: There’s no better spot to experience
and make a toast to Barcelona’s splendid Modernista legacy than
on the rooftop of Gaudi’s most emblematic building.
Mirablau
Carrer Manuel Arnús 2, Plaça Doctor Andreu,
Tibidabo, 93-418-5667
The Scene: Looking to impress your honey? Whisk him
or her up to the graceful, romantic Mirablau, a bar perched atop Tibidabo.
Floor-to-ceiling windows offer dizzying views of Barcelona, with the
bright-blue Mediterranean nuzzling its shores. A posh crowd ascends
to this elegant spot. Clink glasses of champagne against a backdrop
of the city spilling down to the sparkling sea. Daily 11am-3am. The Clincher: Momentous toasts—commemorating
a wedding anniversary or celebrating a birthday that ends with a "0"—beg
for Mirablau’s glittering vistas.
