» Getaway Hotels Mexico City
Even the most devout urbanista needs some downtime. Here are
our top picks for weekend getaway hotels—all destinations in themselves, and within 100 miles or so of the world's greatest cities.
The Draw: Cuernavaca´s most romantic canyon-side European-style boutique hotel. The Scene: Named after the famous Mexican artist, Casa Tamayo has all the pluses—and none of the minuses—of a bohemian residence. On the outskirts of the booming City of the Eternal Spring, this boutique hotel was built in the renovated home of owner Marc Pariente, the Italian consul of the state of Morelos. The property is situated cliff-side, offering breathtaking rooms surrounded by the ravine’s lush vegetation and the added benefit of cool evening breezes. While the hotel is small (there are only 13 bedrooms), the gardens offer enough ambience to keep you happy all day long, particularly couples in search of a quiet getaway; there’s also a small pool that is romantically candlelit at night. Expect top-notch cuisine in the restaurant, which serves modern Mexican specialties. Just next door you’ll find Casa Pariente, a wonderful Italian boutique hotel and restaurant operated by the Casa Tamayo owners with the same level of luxury. Hot Tip: All rooms are named after local artists and intellectuals, many of whom are friends of the owners.Reserve your stay in the “Gabo” (named after Gabriel García Márquez); it offers the best in views and ambience.
La Purificadora
Callejon de la 10 Norte 802, Paseo San Francsico, Barrio el Alto, Puebla 52-222-309-1920, $$ lapurificadora.com
The Draw: Puebla’s hottest designer hotel, and the city’s most happening nightspot. The Scene: The Purificadora brings urban chic into one of the Mexico’s most important colonial centers. Designed by one of the country’s most renowned architects, Ricardo Legorreta, the hotel showcases the contrast of world-class minimalist design within a four-story, 19th century water-purifying plant—hence the name. Highlights include its 100-foot-long, glassed-in, top-floor, aquarium-style pool; spa; purple-accented open-air lobby complete with fire pit; and a grooving ambience more prone to post-modern than traditional Mexican. While out-of-towners have flocked to the boutique hotel’s stylin’ 26 bedrooms (three are suites), since its 2007 opening, the Enrique Olvera signature restaurant and its rooftop bar have become the place to see and be seen among locals. Hot Tip: Lounge-goers tend to vie for fire-pit seats in the lobby at around 8pm on weekends. As the night heats up, the party migrates skyward to the rooftop terrace.
Hacienda San Miguel Regla
Avenida De Las Carretas 1, Hidalgo, 52-509-315-1570, $$
sanmiguelregla.com
The Draw: One of the country’s finest hacienda retreats, in the wilds of Hidalgo.
The Scene: Considered one of the timeless hacienda hotels in Mexico, the all-inclusive Hacienda San Miguel Regla offers a wonderful retreat for those looking to escape Mexico City. Housed in a 17th-century hacienda, the 140-room hotel is surrounded by forest and boasts expansive grounds, pools, and all kinds of opportunities for leisure activities, such as 4x4, Jeep, horseback, and mountain-bike tours. As it is relatively removed from any major urb, the dress here tends toward the casual and comfortable. Hot Tip: Ask to stay in the Cascadas y Marianas section; these lakefront rooms offer the best views of the grounds.
