At the Top: The Right Place. The Right Time. It Matters.
Well, we thought it mattered. But the Night+Day product was either not in the right place or not at the right time: Our “never settle for the ordinary” approach did not attract enough readers to make publishing guidebooks or charging for electronically delivered information profitable. And, as for a free e-letter and website, Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., publisher of the New York Times, and I came to the same conclusion: Giving away high quality information for free is not a good business model.
So, after more than 6000 hotel, restaurant, nightlife, and attractions recommendations from our nearly fifty professional contributors, and 20,000 personal words of advice, it’s time to call it a day (more about that in The Last Word which will be sent to you separately on June 3). But not without some final recommendations on one of our favorite subjects: the night. This, part I of our final free issue of the Night+Day e-letter, features our latest recommendations for nightlife in the world’s coolest cities, and highlights the BEST of the BEST Late-Night Eats.

THE WORLD’S BEST Late-Night Eats
Night owls rejoice! Whether that quick drink before dinner turned into a three-hour minglefest or the rigors of clubbing have left you craving a proper re-fuel, these after-hours kitchens will delight discerning palates and cosmo-coated bellies alike. From midnight dinners to pre-dawn feasts, these Late-Night Eats are all worth keeping your eyelids raised a little longer.
CHICAGO • KIT KAT LOUNGE & SUPPER CLUB
The Draw: Located in the heart of Boystown, performing drag queens serenade visitors. The menu bursts with award-winning martinis and delicious late night plates.
The Scene: Video projectors play vintage movies on the walls while diners sit at long supper-club tables perfect for small or large groups. Enjoy cuisine ranging from calamari to creamy mushroom ravioli. Every 20 minutes, a live show features drag queens performing (i.e., lip-synching) classic Broadway numbers or top 40 hits.
Hot Tip: Big tips get performers to your table for a private show.
LOS ANGELES • 101 COFFEE SHOP
The Draw: Think of this tragically hip diner tucked inside a Best Western hotel as Denny’s for the hungry and hung-over Hollywood sect.
The Scene: Slow-poke service comes with a smirk from a self-aware staff that looks as if it stepped out of a Nylon Magazine photo shoot. The novella-sized menu runs the gamut of classic Americana with a “Whole Foods” twist. There’s usually a wait for late-night or morning-after tables, but the people watching is always A-list.
Hot Tip: Street parking can be tough, so take advantage of the motel’s adjacent free lot.
MEXICO CITY • CAFÉ EL POPULAR
The Draw: Café El Popular is a “Café de Chinos,” or Chinese café—the Mexican equivalent of an old-fashioned American coffee shop. It is, in fact, owned by the descendants of the founder, a Chinese immigrant who opened the place 80 years ago to serve quick meals (including a few nominally Chinese dishes) to workers around the clock. It now offers mostly typical Mexican food like enchiladas and soups, but one can also order breakfast 24/7.
The Scene: After midnight, the main restaurant closes, but the smaller original shop next door remains open. A fascinating mix of clubbers, swing-shift city workers, off-duty cops, and tourists eat and drink merrily.
Hot Tip: The café con leche, poured hot from separate pitchers into a tall glass, is the best in town.

INS and OUTS (NIGHT+DAY’S Latest Recommendations)
Top 5 New Nightlife Openings
D.C. • BARCODE DC • Lounge
barcodedc.com
BarCode comes on to everyone, anxious to please. Health-minded hipsters? Try the green tea mojitos. Independent thinkers? Order the Rose Kennedy cocktail (melon syrup, tequila, lime juice, and Aperol). Simple souls, relax and swallow your PBRs. Backlit black booths, glass, and brushed-steel surfaces vie for the sophisticate’s eye. full review 1101 17th St. NW (L St.), 202-955-9001.
LOS ANGELES • DRAI’S • Supper Club
draishollywood.com
The Vegas impresarios behind Tryst, XS, and Drai’s have brought their signature brand of over-the-top (dare I say cheesy?) Vegas-style partying to the rooftop clubstaurant of the W Hotel. The 20,000-square-foot spectacle features snakeskin couches, gold mirror tiles, and white leather bathroom doors. Although $15 million will not buy subtlety, this is a Los-An-Je-Leez hot spot, so you might see Ne-Yo grabbing the mic for an impromptu sing-along or Rihanna dancing to her own song. full review W Hotel Hollywood, 6250 Hollywood Blvd. (N. Gower St.), 323-962-1111.
MEXICO CITY • BAR CIBELES • Bar
Located near Plaza Cibeles (which has been trying hard to gussy itself up, with mixed success), this large kitsch-retro bar and lounge is under the same management as the ultracool Contramar. It’s a fine place for a drink, offering a good selection of wines by the glass, and a light snack such as the excellent, crisp thin-crust pizza. full review Plaza Villa de Madrid 17 (Plaza Cibeles), 55.5208.2029.
NEW ORLEANS • EIFFEL SOCIETY • Lounge
eiffelsociety.com
This hulking metal-and-glass structure has always seemed out of place amid the mansions and live oaks of St. Charles Avenue. Once the restaurant at Paris’ Eiffel Tower, it was shipped to Louisiana in the 1980s. Now the airy space is filled with installations curated by cultural impresario Kirsha Kaechele. Chef Ian Schnoebelen of Iris has created a menu of global small plates, such as pho, octopus tostadas, and scallops with kaffir lime butter. full review 2040 St. Charles Ave. (Josephine St.), 504-525-2951.
TORONTO • MAISON MERCER • Night Club
maisonmercer.com
This club—the newest in the Entertainment District—draws trendy and fashionable 20- and 30-something who love the attention they’re getting as much as they adore the pulsing beats of the latest from Lady Gaga and Kanye. The patrons sport skinny jeans and high heels, and they give equal time to their iPhones and Blackberrys as to the opposite sex (to see if they’re watching). full review 15 Mercer St. (King St. W.), 416-341-8777. |
