At the Top: The Halloween Stars are Aligned
If you’re going to have a holiday-related celebration, it always helps to have the holiday fall on a Friday or Saturday. New Year’s Eve is a case in point—it’s loads more fun on a weekend night than midweek. With Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, October’s end-of-month parties promise to be fantastic.
As we all know, the Irish saved civilization; more importantly, they may have given us Halloween! According to history.com, the origins of Halloween date to some 2000 years ago, when the Celts celebrated their New Year on November 1st. The night before, ghosts of the dead visited the living world, and bonfires were all the rage. A thousand years later, the Romans—who knew a good thing when they saw it—revived the holiday with the help of a pope or two. November 1st became All Saints’ Day, and the evening prior became Hallowmas, which became...
In most countries, All Saints’ Day is the main day of “celebration,” albeit a somber one. Good examples are found in Barcelona and Mexico City. Americans, however, seem to prefer a good secular party to a day of religious remembrance, and have focused on October 31st. As our TOP 5 list at the left shows, our favorite celebrations are Fantasy Fest in Key West—a short hop from Miami—and varied festivities in San Francisco. Well, San Francisco used to have an amazing Halloween. Recently though, the raucous Castro Street parties have been tamed by city officials who deemed the celebration unmanageable. No streets will be closed, and the police will likely outnumber the revelers. Nevertheless, San Francisco’s incredible Exotic Erotic Ball, an over-the-top, stadium-filled nightclub and costume party held on October 24th, provides great practice and inspiration for your Halloween plans. Wear lingerie, pajamas, fetish attire, or a costume. Sexy is the operative word.
It would be hard to beat sunny Key West as a backdrop to a Halloween celebration. Fantasy Fest lasts nine days, beginning October 23rd, but the highlight among many wild and crazy happenings is the spectacle of the Captain Morgan Fantasy Fest Parade on the 31st. If you’ve ever wondered how you’d look in body paint, this is the place to be. And thanks to the stars aligning, you’ll have all day Sunday to wash it off before going back to work.

THE WORLD’S BEST Late-Night Eats
Night owls rejoice! Whether that quick drink before dinner turned into a three-hour minglefest or the rigors of clubbing have left you craving a proper re-fuel, these after-hours kitchens will delight discerning palates and cosmo-coated bellies alike. From midnight dinners to pre-dawn feasts, these Late-Night Eats are all worth keeping your eyelids raised a little longer.
CHICAGO • HUB 51
The Draw: There are few places where a good bone-in ribeye is offered at 2am. This is one of them.
The Scene: A mixed-bag crowd (preppy scenesters, local business people, tourists) hover around the front-of-the-house DJ booth and kick back in front of flat-screen TVs.
Hot Tip: While steaks sate hearty appetites, smaller dishes like sweet potato maki and hand-dipped ice cream bars are perfect for night owls who only need a little jolt.
LAS VEGAS • FIX
The Draw: A stellar cocktail list (order the Cucumber Essence) and haute comfort food by chef Brian Massie make this spot as popular for pre-partying drinks as post-club chow. Bobby Baldwin burgers, lobster tacos, and warm donuts with chocolate and peanut butter dipping sauces are a must.
The Scene: Its location, right off the casino floor of the Bellagio, ensures a well-heeled crowd. It doesn’t hurt that the restaurant is constructed entirely from Costa Rican Patouk wood, with undulating ceilings that give it a modern edge.
Hot Tip: The “Very Adult” mac and cheese is salty, crispy, cheesy perfection. Although the menu fails to mention it, it’s also a no-no for vegetarians. Chef Massie’s take on the classic is actually breaded, truffled mac-and-cheese sticks, an excellent antidote to a night at neighboring nightclub, the Bank.
SAN FRANCISO • GLOBE
The Draw: Despite its name, Globe serves down-home California comfort food, including a deservedly famous salad lardon and tuna tartare with tapenade.
The Scene: The space, comprised mostly of the metal and exposed brick now known as “industrial chic,” has long been a post-shift watering hole for FiDi chefs. The scene doesn’t get interesting until after 10pm.
Hot Tip: Sunday night farm dinners feature local abbondanza and lure Mission and SoMa types; other nights, look for pre-partiers headed to 5A5.

DC • BIBIANA OSTERIA ENOTECA • Italian Restaurant
bibianadc.com
“The whole idea is to be hip and happening but serving authentic cuisine,” restaurateur Ashok Bajaj told Washingtonian magazine when Bibiana opened in September 2009. And that tells you everything you need to know—nearly. A décor consisting of pointy metallic chandeliers, blown-up photos of the Colosseum and of Audrey Hepburn upon a Vespa, and black-leather and stainless-steel accents establishes a sleekly sophisticated tone. full review

LOS ANGELES • THE ASSOCIATION • Lounge
With its subterranean “no sign” locale and pub-like sensibilities, this self-described “proper boozer” is straight out of a Guy Ritchie crime caper. In fact, its basement entrance with brass-lion door knocker is an exact replica of the British Prime Minister’s door at 10 Downing. London-born owner Ashley Joyce brings East End spirit to Downtown’s booming classic cocktail culture, with snazzy barkeeps specializing in “throwback” libations. full review

This long-awaited addition to the less-hectic but exceedingly happening north end of South Beach is simply dazzling. The clever design gives all the super-spacious rooms ocean views, and the lavish features include signature comfy beds, private balconies, two flat-screen TVs, and bathrooms with spa showers. NEW YORK • THE STANDARD • Modern Hotel
standardhotels.com
Few boutique hotels have sparked as much buzz as André Balazs’ The Standard in the Meatpacking District. The opening was celebrity-jammed (of course), and the hotel continues to appear regularly in the local press. Recent titillating headlines—“High Line Peep Show!” trumpeted one newspaper—described how blushing visitors to the nearby High Line elevated park could apparently see hotel guests undressing and cavorting naked in their rooms.
