March’s Top 5 New Restaurant Recommendations
DC • Birch & Barley and ChurchKey
Los Angeles • Barbrix
Miami • Mai Tardi
New York • A Voce
Toronto • The Roosevelt Room
DC • BIRCH & BARLEY AND CHURCHKEY • Modern American
Downstairs (Birch & Barley) is the beer-centric, wine-friendly,
fun
fine-dining establishment. Upstairs (ChurchKey) is the all-beer,
all-the-time pub and lounge: 555 beers representing 30 countries, including 50 drafts and five “authentic, hand-pumped, cask-conditioned ales.” Together, they’re a pair of crowd-pleasing (patrons routinely start showing up at 4pm), palate-provoking destinations, especially, but not exclusively, for those who know a German Eku Pils from a Two Hearted Ale. (In fact, a full complement of cocktails is available on both levels.) Favorites on the Birch & Barley dinner menu are the Arctic char tartare starter and the duck two ways (breast and confit) entrée.
Staff
recommend beer pairings, if desired, and these can
change
as often as the inventory, which is daily.
Birch & Barley Tue–Sun 5:30–10pm.
ChurchKey Mon–Thu 4pm–1am, Fri 4pm–2am,
Sat noon–2am, Sun noon–1am.

LOS ANGELES • BARBRIX • Tapas
An Eastside home-away-from-home for hipsterati, this ‘40s-era former schoolhouse is the latest buzz-worthy wine and tapas bar to hit Silver Lake. A wraparound bar sits at the front end of the L-shaped eatery, while counter dining in the back offers access to the open kitchen and chef Don Dickman (who hosts monthly cooking classes). Although there is plenty of seating in between, the front outdoor patio is the primo spot for partaking in the market-driven, pan-Mediterranean small plates (roasted pork belly, fried risotto balls, farro salad, monkfish with chorizo), artisan beers, and a fairly priced wine list that stretches from California to Croatia. It’s a bit hard to find (directly across from Baller Hardware) and parking is a headache (go valet), so follow the scruffy beards and willowy
figures pulling in and out in their hybrids.
Sun–Thu 6–11pm, Fri–Sat 6pm–midnight.

MIAMI • MAI TARDI • Italian
Mai Tardi—“never late” in Italian—has joined what is arguably South Florida’s hottest dining ‘hood: the Design District. Moving into the old Brosia spot, with its lovely mosaic patio and shady oak trees, Mai Tardi serves Northern Italian fare—thin-crusted pizzas from the wood-burning oven, gnocchi, cured meats, tapas, and comforting pasta dishes. All this comes from the same folks who are behind successful casual Italian eateries Tiramesu, Spris, and Segafredo. You may find trendier cuisine down the street, but you won’t find a more relaxing oasis to spend time drinking wine and lounging with friends.
Mon–Thu 11:30am–11pm, Fri–Sat 11:30am–midnight

Second Ave.), 305-572-1400

NEW YORK • A VOCE • Italian
The elegant A Voce, helmed by chef Missy Robbins, brings a
welcome—and surprisingly moderately priced—taste of Italy to
Columbus Circle. Robbins features a modern take on regional Italian
cuisine, such as crisp trout with bitter greens and lamb chops and sausage with Umbrian lentils. A Voce sits on the third floor of the Time Warner Center; ask for a window table, overlooking Columbus Circle. It gets
busy with a happy-hour crowd, who flirt over the fine Italian and French
wines. The restaurant also has a location on Madison Avenue.
Mon–Fri 11:30am–2:30pm and 5–11:30pm,
Sat–Sun 11am–3pm and 5–11:30pm.
$$ 10 Columbus Circle (Eighth Ave.), 212-823-2523

TORONTO • THE ROOSEVELT ROOM • Continental
Modeled after the Art Deco vaudeville clubs, this modern supper club offers gourmet dining, burlesque shows, au courant DJs, and a regular soundtrack of 1920s jazz. Courtesy of executive chef Trevor Wilkinson—
of Trevor Kitchen and Bar—the menu is modern French cuisine (seared duck, foie gras, charcuterie) paired with locally sourced seasonal ingredients. Add to that a martini menu inspired by old-school spirits
and an impressive champagne selection, and The Roosevelt Room
is the perfect place to savor with your most fashionable friends.
Tue–Sat 5pm–2am.
